ABOUT
The Scotsman (Joyce McMillan): “Words, music & film, stay in the mind like something strong & healing. The overall effect is beautiful & full of a kind of soul-saving gentleness. Rutherford’s vision is ultimately uplifting”.
The Herald (Mary Brennan): “Rutherford has the idiosyncratic turn of phrase and febrile twist of the imagination that enables her to spike the expected moment with some sudden, disconcerting flash of insight … an artist of consummate understanding, compassion and onstage finesse”.
I am a socially-engaged artist who has been creating multi-disciplinary work for thirty-three years, crossing the roles of:
Writer
Starting with personal storytelling that reaches out to include similar or conflicting experiences of others, be that professional collaborators, or members of the community. The work manages to make difficult subjects such as displacement, ageing, family relations, and miscommunication in relationships accessible to wide audiences while developing innovative forms of personal storytelling, while combining psychology, social and political history, while exploring the distortion of personal memory.
Performer
I present self-devised scripts live in a conversational tone, akin to stand-up, creating a welcoming, down-to-earth environment for audiences.
Video-maker
Learning to video edit on U-Matic machines in 1988, I film and edit documentary-style pieces, alongside more experimental visual landscapes. (Competent in Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro)
Sound Artist
Working with audio interviews and soundscapes, I frequently collaborate with musicians (folk, experimental & international).
Director/ Dramaturg
Directing my own self-devised solo and group performances and working with other artists in a new play dramaturgical role.
Tutor/ Workshop Leader
From one-off creative writing sessions to building a focused programme, I’ve developed workshops for arts higher-education, as well as health and social work services. Often working with vulnerable groups where initial low confidence blossoms into powerful personal storytelling in words and in images.
